Have you noticed that there has been an increase in health issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohns, or Colitis? Have you wondered why we are seeing an increase in these gastro-intestinal complaints along with an increase in food intolerances? Maybe it is because our guts are not healthy. When we digest our food, our body requires, in simple terms, 3 things: digestive enzymes, stomach acid and good bacteria or probiotics. "Probiotics are beneficial forms of gut bacteria that help stimulate the natural digestive juices and enzymes that keep our digestive organs functioning properly."(Global Healing Center Natural Health and Organic Living Probiotic, Published on January 21, 2011, Last Updated on June 19, 2014) When we are lacking in any of these 3 areas, it can create an angry environment within our digestive system and affect our lives and health drastically. But how do we increase these items?
The first way to help our body is to strive to eat clean. We all can benefit from eating more vegetables, fruit and lean proteins prepared in a healthy fashion. The media tells us that eating certain foods, most commonly, those that have undergone some type of fermentation will increase the probiotics in our systems and aid with digestion. These are things like yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut. Most commonly we think of yogurts. However, many yogurts also contain high amounts of sugar or artificial sweeteners, which we are trying to decrease or avoid. Then there are some foods that we might just not normally consume such as microalgae, tempeh or kimchi or kombucha tea. So how can we improve our natural normal flora? Improve our natural amounts of probiotics? I suggest supplementing our diet. This can be confusing though. There are tons of different products, tons of different literature that say what kind and how much. It can be confusing when you are in the health food store looking at all the choices and all the different price points. Do you want it in a liquid form, a pill form or in a shake??? So which one do you choose?
Let me suggest to you some of my favorite products. First, Shakeology. Why? Because here is a product that is not just a probiotic, not just a digestive enzyme supplement, not just a green food source, not just a super food supplement and not just a protein shake. It is the WHOLE product. And it is derived from WHOLE foods so our bodies are getting the entire benefit of the foods that are used. It can be used as a snack or as a meal replacement. In independent studies, Shakeology has helped with food cravings, digestion issues, sugar handling issues and more. Secondly, I suggest using Standard Process products. This company has all of the above products that you can take individually. Standard Process productsare also whole food supplements, not just vitamins. Again this gives us the benefit of the whole food versus just a certain vitamin component of the food. Standard Process produces most of their own foods for production or has only certain farms that they purchase from so that they can maintain the high standards that they desire. So is there is any scientific evidence that taking these supplements is really beneficial?
Fortunately an article published thru Aliment Pharmacol Ther. Oct 2013; 38(8): 864-886. Published online Aug 27, 2013. doi: (10.1111/apt.12460 PMCID: PMC3925990 Systematic review: probiotics in the management of lower gastrointestinal symptoms in clinical practice - an evidence-based international guide A P S Hungin,* C Mulligan,*† B Pot,‡§¶** P Whorwell,†† L Agréus,‡‡ P Fracasso,§§ C Lionis,¶¶ J Mendive,*** J-M Philippart de Foy,††† G Rubin,* C Winchester,† and N Wit‡‡‡, European Society for Primary Care Gastroenterology) organized a review of many different studies by many different authors. Each reviewer was given a statement and had to agree or disagree with the statement based on their reviews of the studies. Health-related quality of life: Statement 12: with specific probiotics, improvement of symptoms has been shown to lead to improvement in some aspects of health-related quality of life Agreement: 80% (6, 10%; 5, 30%; 4, 40%; 3, 20%; grade of evidence for effect: moderate). Statement 13: probiotics have a favourable safety profile in patients with a range of lower GI symptoms typically managed in primary care or general practice Agreement: 100% (6, 80%; 5, 20%; grade of evidence for effect: high).
It has been determined that supplementing is beneficial, the only question left for you is would you like to improve your health with a shake daily or add some supplements to your daily activities?? I would be happy to talk with you in more depth regarding this.
